Microsoft Asks Users to Ignore Windows Firewall Errors

Microsoft is advising users to disregard Windows Firewall error messages that may appear after installing the June 2025 non-security preview update for Windows 11. The issue, which affects only select systems running the 24H2 build, has been linked to a feature still under development.
What’s Happening?
After installing KB5060829, users may encounter the following in Event Viewer:
- Event 2042 (Windows Firewall with Advanced Security)
- Messages stating: “Config Read Failed” and “More data is available”
Despite the warnings, Microsoft says the errors are harmless and do not affect firewall functionality or system performance.
"After installing the June 2025 non-security preview update for Windows (KB5060829), an error event related to Windows Firewall with Advanced Security may appear in the security event log. This can safely be ignored," Microsoft stated.
"Please note that Windows Firewall should continue to function normally, and no action is required to prevent or resolve this error. This event is related to a feature currently under development and not yet fully implemented."
A Known Work in Progress
Microsoft confirmed that the issue stems from incomplete integration of a new firewall-related feature, which is not yet live in production builds. As a result, the system logs a false error when attempting to access or reference parts of the feature.
The bug appears to be limited to Windows 11 24H2 users who have opted into the preview update channel.
Fix on the Way
Microsoft engineers are already working on a fix and have committed to sharing further details soon. In the meantime, no manual intervention is required by users or IT administrators.
A Pattern of Recent Glitches
This is the latest in a series of non-critical bugs affecting recent Windows builds. In recent months, Microsoft has addressed multiple similar issues, including:
- April 2025: A bug that triggered false BitLocker encryption errors on Windows 10 and 11
- April 2025: Another issue causing Error 0x80070643 during Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates
These incidents, while not critical, underscore the growing pains of continuous update cycles, particularly in preview channels.
Bottom Line
If you're seeing Event 2042 errors in Windows Firewall logs after the June 2025 update—don’t panic.
Microsoft says it's safe to ignore, and the fix is on the way.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation and report when the patch becomes available.
